The processes of methylation take place continuously on many levels in the human organism and participate in a huge number of biochemical transformations that determine our health. They are responsible for the synthesis of such compounds as creatine, carnitine, coenzyme Q10, melatonin, choline, glutathione (a strong antioxidant) or many neurotransmitters needed for normal brain functions. They are also necessary for amino acid metabolism, the reactions of detoxification in the liver and normal Krebs cycle - the process in which energy in the form of APT is produced.

Methylation is also responsible for regulating the expression of some flawed genes, thus protecting the organism from cancer development and other problems.

Irregularities in methylation processes can distort the functioning of the organism in many, often serious, ways. They can cause the formation of cancer cells, an increase of oxidative stress, disorders in the functioning of nerve cells, impeded metabolism of amino acids and other important compounds or impaired energy production. The situation can also lead to decreased efficiency of homocysteine neutralisation, and high concentrations of that amino acids result in the development of many serious diseases of the circulatory system.

Methylation disorders are often caused by deficiencies of many vitamins and compounds that occur naturally in the organism. Among them are vitamin B12, B6, folic acid, choline and S-adenosyl methionine.
