Raw Series, Cissus is a dietary supplement containing top-quality extract of Cissus quadrangularis – an Indian plant used traditionally to reduce dysfunctions within the musculoskeletal system.

The preparation improves overall health and exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, and analgesic properties. It is recommended particularly for people who struggle with connective tissue damage, pain in joints, tendons, and ligaments, and for convalescents after bone fractures. It is also a valuable element of osteoporosis prevention. It proves fantastic as a sports supplement – it prevents overload injuries, reduces the risk of injuries, and the time necessary for efficient regeneration. Numerous tests have proven that the compounds contained in the plant work analogically to endogenous anabolic hormones but without the risk of side effects.

Veldt grape (Cissus quadrangularis) belongs to the grape family, it can be found mainly in India and Sri Lanka, where indigenous people have been using it for ages to reduce pain and accelerate the healing of broken bones.

Phytochemical tests have demonstrated that the plant contains extraordinarily many various compounds with versatile health-promoting activity. The ones that dominate among them are flavonoids, vitamin C, vitamin E, stilbene derivatives, β-sitosterol, quercetin, and kaempferol. However, the main substances responsible for the plant’s therapeutic effects seem to be the unique tetracyclic triterpenoids called ketosteroids.

Benefits for joints and bones
Veldt grape can be an efficient remedy for various ailments connected with the musculoskeletal system. It helps to maintain normal bone mass, reduces the time necessary for the bone to heal after a fracture, accelerates the healing of cracks and microtrauma, and prevents osteoporosis.

The mechanism of the plant’s activity is quite complex. On the one hand, the compounds contained in it reduce the production of cytokines IL-1, IL-6, and TNF-alpha, which not only induce inflammation, but also stimulate the activity of osteoclasts (cells responsible for bone resorption). On the other, veldt grape has a beneficial effect on mineral management. It is beneficial for the accumulation of calcium in bones and stimulates the deposition of mucopolysaccharides in the places of bone formation.

Scientists are convinced that veldt grape extracts stimulate the activity of fibroblasts, chondroblasts, and osteoblasts. Moreover, they stimulate osteoblast proliferation as well as are able to affect the differentiation of mesenchymal stem cells (MSC) so that they form osteoblasts.

It has been observed that the activity of veldt grape extracts accelerates the healing and remodelling of bones after an injury. Veldt grape has been proven to speed up all stages of tissue healing and intensify the processes that accompany it. It reduces the time of the fibroblastic phase by stimulating the proliferation of fibroblasts and the production of mucopolysaccharides and glycoproteins. It also speeds up the remodelling stage by stimulating the synthesis of collagen, which is deposited in the area of damage.

Anti-inflammatory and analgesic effects
Veldt grape exhibits great anti-inflammatory activity. The exact mechanism of its activity has not been fully discovered yet. Scientists think that it is possible thanks to the inhibition of the enzyme COX-1, which prevents the conversion of arachidonic acid to pro-inflammatory prostaglandins. Veldt grape can also reduce pain. The power of its activity is comparable with that of popular analgesic drugs of the NSAID group; however, contrary to them, it does not irritate the gastric mucosa.

Osteoporosis prevention
Veldt grape can be used both in the prevention and therapy of osteoporosis. Osteoporosis is one of more common diseases of affluence, characterised by pathological bone mass reduction. It is developed mainly as a result of distorted hormonal balance, which leads to disorders in bone turnover. As a result, bones become spongy, fragile, brittle, and susceptible to fractures.

Veldt grape helps to restore normal bone mineral density and regulate bone turnover. It is beneficial for the deposition of mucopolysaccharides in the place of bone formation, enhances calcium uptake, and supports its deposition in bone tissue. A scientific study has compared the effect of osteoporosis treatment in menopausal women with veldt grape extracts and with traditional oestrogen therapy. It turned out that the statistical bone thickness, their density and toughness were comparable in both cases.

Veldt grape in sports supplementation
Veldt grape is steadily gaining popularity in the athletic environment, and especially in the group of bodybuilders. The activity of ketosteroids contained in the plant imitates that of endogenous anabolic hormones and can make it easier to achieve the dream body.

Veldt grape helps to reduce adipose tissue. It reduces the absorption of fats and carbohydrates, thanks to which it naturally and effortlessly reduces the number of calories assimilated from food. In a clinical placebo-controlled studies conducted on 123 overweight people, a significant increase in body mass was observed after eight weeks in all patients who supplemented veldt grape. Additionally, metabolic parameters were also improved (the levels of glucose, cholesterol, triglycerides, and the concentration of the C-reactive protein, the main inflammation marker in the organism).

Veldt grape reduces that time necessary for efficient regeneration after intensive physical effort. It has been observed that the compounds contained in the plant have the ability to dilate blood vessels, that way enhancing blood flow. It is believed that increasing blood flow is beneficial for the nutrition of muscle tissue, thanks to which the process of repairing the microtrauma induced by training takes place faster and more efficiently.

Veldt grape has an analgesic effect and can reduce joint pain, especially that caused by overload during excessive physical activity. In a study, a group of athletes supplemented veldt grape every day for eight weeks. After that time, joint pain was reduced by about 31% in all tested patients. The assessment was conducted based on a universal tool for measuring pain, the so-called WOMAC scale.

Veldt grape has an anabolic effect. It inhibits the activity of corticosteroids, which in some conditions (especially during increased physical and emotional stress) can cause the breakdown of muscle tissue.

Health-promoting properties
Veldt grape reduces the risk of developing heart and circulatory system diseases. It is beneficial for the regulation of the lipid profile – it reduces the level of triglycerides and low-density lipoproteins (LDL) and at the same time increases the level of the beneficial cholesterol fraction, HDL. It slows down lipid peroxidation, which is a relevant factor in the development of atherosclerosis.

Veldt grape supports liver functions, stimulates bile production, and enhances the process of detoxification in the organism.

Veldt grape increases the production of insulin and increases the sensitivity of tissues to its activity. It can be used to enhance glucose-insulin management as well as to prevent type 2 diabetes and metabolic syndromes.

The plant improves blood circulation. It has a relaxant effect on the endothelium covering blood vessels, arteries and capillaries, thanks to which it facilitates their dilation and smooth blood flow. It is particularly important for people struggling with the problem of atherosclerosis.

Veldt grape contains many bioactive compounds with antioxidant properties. They sweep excess free radicals from the organism, reduce the intensity of oxidative stress, and in that way reduce the risk of developing chronic diseases.

To sum up, Cissus is a valuable preparation with versatile activity. Its natural origin guarantees safety of use with no risk of side effects. Supplementation is recommended for athletes who struggle with overload and other types of injuries, as well as for seniors, whose problems with joints are a natural consequence of the passing time.
