Jarrow Formulas Theanine 100 is a dietary supplement which contains 100 mg of L-theanine in a single capsule. This organic compound occurs mainly in Chinese tea (Camellia sinensis) and it is known from promotion of relaxation without the feeling of sleepiness, which very often occurs during the use of preparations which have a similar effect.

It has been estimated that nearly 65% of the adult population is experiencing stress in its various forms. The statistics continue to grow. Green tea has been consumed since antiquity, as it is believed to have relaxing properties. It has been discovered that a substance called theanine is responsible for such an effect. It is an isolated substance which occurs almost only in green tea.

L-theanine belongs to a group of non-protein alpha amino acids. It does not commonly occurr in the human diet. It is a compound which very easily crosses the blood-brain barrier and shows psychoactive properties. As a derivative of glutamine, it shows certain structural similarity to it and to neurotransmitters, to which it is also a precursor – GABA, glutamate.

It is considered to have nootropic properties and calming effect. It is also believed that it can improve the mood as well as reduce stress and anxiety. It seems that L-theanine increases the intensity of alpha waves which are used in super-learning techniques. Such an action can contribute to the increase of workforce productivity and effectiveness of learning.

SunTheanine® is a trade name for a patented pure form of L-theanine. It is not a green tea extract, but it is manufactured in a special fermentation process that mimics the natural process which occurs in the leaves of tea. As a result, 100% pure isomer of L-theanine is obtained.

L-theanine and glutamate
An interesting fact may be that L-theanine has an affinity for all three subgroups of glutamate receptors and it can suppress them. It is also believed that it may reduce the concentration of glutamate and inhibit its synaptic release, by competitive blocking of transporters.

As it is commonly well-known, glutamate is harmful for the human body system. It interferes with the functions of brain core and artificially raises the appetite. As it affects the limbic system, it causes excessive sweating and such stress reactions as stomach pains, high blood pressure, heart palpitations and migraines. Moreover, it limits perception, learning abilities and concentration.

Combination with caffeine
The studies in healthy adult humans have demonstrated that a dose of 100 mg of L-theanine in combination with 50 mg of caffeine positively influences the parameters of the accuracy and focus in the tests of cognitive ability, in comparison to a group which has consumed only 50 mg of caffeine.

Other experiment has shown that the use of caffeine in a dose of 150 mg is able to improve perception, rapid visual information processing (RVIP) and response time. When 250 mg of L-theanine has been added, all above mentioned results have been observed and, moreover, the alertness and response time have been improved as well as the headaches caused by caffeine have been reduced. The response time and the ability to switch between tasks have been improved even in the treatment which consisted of lower doses (50 mg of caffeine, 100 mg of L-theanine). In this study, the improvement of the focus has been observed, as the influence of distracting stimuli has been reduced.

Possible properties
There are also some clinical trials that indicate that theanine may be applied to improve sleep quality, reduce symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS) and improve the efficiency of learning and mental acuity. It also promotes concentration, reduces the negative side effects of caffeine use and supports the immune system. However, due to the small number of these studies, it has been suggested to continue them to finally confirm these properties.

To sum it all up, Jarrow Formulas Theanine 100 is recommended, due to its nootropic properties, for all people who are exposed to excessive mental and physical effort. It is also recommended for athletes whose disciplines require concentration and memory skills, and for those who suffer from disrupted regeneration, caused by chronic stress.

The supplement can also be used by people in the periods of increased learning (during exams) and by those who intensively work mentally and for long periods (for example during major projects and works).
