Phenylalanine, like 19 other protein amino acids, is used to build muscle proteins. However, according to specialists, the most important role played by phenylalanine occurs in the central nervous system, where it is responsible for the transmission of signals between neurons. It is the first link in the multi-stage process of catecholamine synthesis, and thus affects the mood, energy level, and cognitive functions.

Phenylalanine is a fairly popular component of supplements – most often in combination with other amino acids and as an additive to preparations targeting the needs of physically active people. As a single amino acid, it is mainly used to suppress excessive appetite and improve mood. In addition, it has a positive effect on well-being, has a slightly stimulating effect, and may also relieve pain. Some studies indicate the possibility of using phenylalanine in people struggling with addictions. It has been observed that phenylalanine reduces the adverse symptoms of alcohol withdrawal syndrome.

Phenylalanine-based supplements are generally considered safe for the body. The only contraindication to using the supplements is an inherited metabolic disease called phenylketonuria.
