Jarrow Formulas Inulin FOS is a prebiotic dietary supplement, containing inulin and FOS (fructooligosaccharides) Orafti®. These substances constitute soluble fiber, positively influencing the growth of beneficial bacterial flora, essential for healthy intestines and general health of the organism. The product appears in the comfortable form of powder, 180 g and does not contain wheat, gluten, soya, dairy, eggs, fish and peanuts.

Prebiotics are pro-health substances, which are not digested in the digestive system, which constitute breeding ground for intestinal bacterial microflora, stimulating the growth of beneficial bacteria. Prebiotics have positive influence on the human organism. An additive of prebiotics to food of newborns, who are not fed by mother’s milk accelerated colonization of the digestive system with bacteria Bifidobacterium. They help to restore balance of intestinal flora in case of infection and antibiotic therapy. Moreover, prebiotics decrease the concentration of lipids in blood and thanks to lowering pH, they increase solubility of compounds of calcium, iron, increasing their bioavailability.

Inulin from the chemical point of view it is a compound belonging to long-chain fructans of inulin type, built of sugar entities joined with β-2-1 glycoside bond. This bond is resistant to digestive enzymes present in the human digestive system, which enables permeation of inulin to the large intestine in an unchanged form. In the lower part of the large intestine, inulin undergoes hydrolysis and fermentation by bacterial flora, constituting a valuable breeding ground for beneficial bacteria - especially Bifidobacterium sp. and Lactobacillus sp., causing the growth of their population.

Inulin positively influences the composition of bacterial microflora of the digestive system. It was proven that inulin inhibits the development of potentially pathogenic microbes, i.a.: Enterobacteriacae, Escherichia coli, Clostridium perfringens, Salmonella or Shigella, at the same time causing the growth of the amount of positive bacteria, producing bioactive metabolites with pro-health properties - B-group and K-group vitamins, short-chain fatty acids, antioxidants. Restoring the balance of intestinal microflora is incredibly important from the point of view of prophylaxis of many diseases and entails enormous health benefits. These benefits include tightening of intestinal barrier, improvement of well-being, facilitation of digestion, increase of bioavailability of nutrients and immunity boost.

Inulin normalizes lipid profile in blood. It was proven that supplementation with inulin causes the decrease of LDL cholesterol level and triglycerides and the increase of the HDL fraction. Moreover, it may limit the absorption of cholesterol from the digestive system. Inulin is therefore a valuable dietary supplement in atherosclerosis and obesity.

Inulin is an important element of anti-cancer prophylaxis. By influencing enzymatic activity of intestinal flora, it causes the decrease of the activity of bacterial βglucuronidase. This enzyme, produced by bacteria Escherichia coli, Peptostreptococcus, Bacteroides or Clostridia, inhabiting large intestine, causes hydrolysis of glucuronic toxins, steroid hormones, drugs or carcinogens, secreted with bile. Increased activity of βglucuronidase has been connected with the increased risk of hormone-dependent cancers, i.a. prostate and breast cancers.

Fructooligosaccharides (FOS) belong to short-chain fructanes of inulin type and play prebiotic functions. Similarly to inulin, FOS is fermented in the colon to the compounds metabolized and absorbed by intestinal epithelium (short-chain fatty acids, lactic acid) and it is conducive to the development of beneficial bacterial flora. A study, in which the influence of 15-day supplementation with fructooligosaccharides on the composition of microflora was evaluated proved the increase of the presence of bifidobacteria and simultaneous drop of potentially disease-causing bacteria Bacteroides, Fusobacterium and Clostridium.

To sum up, Jarrow Formulas Inulin FOS is a dietary supplement, effectively supporting restoration and maintenance of balance of bacterial microflora of the digestive system. The preparation is recommended especially to people during and after antibiotic therapy, in digestive system infections, diarrheas, lower immunity, energy drop, in circulatory system diseases and as an element of prophylaxis.
