NAD+ (nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide) found in cells is the coenzymatic active form of vitamin B3. It is into this substance that the basic forms of vitamin B3, such as nicotinic acid and nicotinamide, must be metabolized.

The NAD+ molecule was discovered in 1906 as a factor accelerating fermentation in yeast extracts. Subsequent years of research on NAD+ led to it being designated a nucleotide playing a role in REDOX reactions.
