Thyme was used in ancient times as a food preservative and disinfectant. It has been already known then for its anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties.

When it comes to health benefits of this plant, it is worth mentioning that it contains flavonoids, namely compounds with a strong antifungal and antioxidant effect. They help lower blood pressure and cleanse the respiratory tract due to its relaxant properties.

Thymol is another active ingredient in thyme. It is essential oil with antibacterial and expectorant properties, which is of vital importance in infections of the throat and oral cavity.

The plant is also good source of many minerals, i.e. iron, required for red blood cell formation, magnesium, critical to healthy neurological and muscle function, calcium, a building block of bones and teeth which contributes to the maintenance of the acid-base balance, and selenium that regulate thyroid function.

Thyme contains also vitamins – especially vitamin C an B vitamins.

It is also believed to have a sedative effect.
