Kelp Kelp

Swanson Kelp is a dietary supplement containing a high-quality extract from brown algae. It is an excellent source of iodine and other important microelements.

The preparation also works well in the case of disorders induced by iodine insufficiency and is especially recommended for individuals suffering from some thyroid gland dysfunctions. In addition, sea algae are attributed anti-oxidising, detoxifying and anti-coagulant properties. They also protect the heart and circulatory system.

Kelp is a common name of Laminaria (a kind of seaweed belonging to brown algae). This species is most often encountered in the northern and southern Atlantic Ocean and in the northern Pacific Ocean. It can also be found in the polar and moderate climate, mostly in the form of characteristic kelp forests. It is a common and valued diet element of the Japanese and Polynesian.

Kelp as a repository of nutrients
Laminaria are a genuine repository of vitamins, micro- and macroelements, valuable nutrients and unique pro-health compounds. The brown algae contain e.g. the following vitamins: A, C, E, K, B-group vitamins; more than one hundred various minerals, including, first and foremost, iodine, but also selenium, magnesium, potassium, iron, calcium, trace elements: vanadium, germanium, iridium and rubidium.

Kelp also provides significant amino acids, is a good source of lysine, leucine and phenylalanine. In addition, scientists revealed that it contains many strong anti-oxidants from the group of carotenoids and flavonoids. Polysaccharides, in particular alginic acid and sodium alginate, as well as the unique fucoidin and laminarin, also play a significant pro-health role.

Kelp for the thyroid gland health
Scientists have no doubts that the correct functioning of the thyroid gland depends on the supply of iodine. It is crucial for the correct secretion of the hormones the gland releases, which are triiodothyronine (T3) and thyroxine (T4).

Brown algae contain a lot of natural iodine, thanks to which they support the functions of the thyroid gland and prevent metabolic disorders, which are the consequence of the deteriorated functioning of this organ. They are recommended especially to persons suffering from hypothyroidism.

Kelp and the weight loss process
Kelp supports the weight loss process in many ways. Often, the sole regulation of the thyroid gland functions by providing an additional dosage of iodine allows to restore correct metabolism and speed it up, which in turn leads to weight loss in itself.

Scientists also emphasize the huge slimming potential of flucoxanthin present in kelp. It stimulates the activity of the UCP-1 protein, which controls thermogenesis processes. It acts directly in the fatty tissue, therefore it does not stimulate the nervous system as other thermogenics do.

Sodium alginate present in brown algae may also contribute to the reduction of the fatty tissue. According to some scientists, it can limit the absorption of fat in the intestines even by 75% (!).

Kelp for the detoxification of the organism
Kelp facilitates the detoxification of the system and is recommended for organisms contaminated with heavy metals. The alginic acid and sodium alginate it contains bind easily poisonous compounds in the digestive system and neutralize the harmful impact of heavy metals.

Kelp for the heart and the circulatory system
Kelp has a beneficial influence on the factors which increase the risk of cardiovascular diseases. It helps to lower cholesterol and decrease the number of atherosclerotic plaques in blood vessels. Fucoidin present in brown algae is also credited with the ability to dissolve clots and reduce excessive aggregation of platelets, which is one of the elements of cardiovascular disease prevention.

Kelp as an anti-inflammatory agent
Kelp, and especially fucoidin contained in it, plays an important role in the organism’s inflammatory response. It reduces the number of all the major players involved in the inflammatory reation cascade, which means it influences the secretion of nitric oxide, inhibits the production of prostaglandins E2, decreases the number of pro-inflammatory cytokines IL-β, reduces the activity of the NF-k β complex.

Kelp for strong bones
Brown algae can be definitely recommended to individuals complaining of weak bones or belonging to the group at high risk of osteoporosis. Many studies have shown that flucoidin contained in them promotes the increase of bone density and mass. It stimulates the development of cells responsible for bone formation, and in addition, it promotes the growth of new blood vessels, which improves access to nutrients.

To sum up, Swanson Kelp is a supplement with universal application. Thanks to the high content of iodine, it is recommended especially to persons suffering from this element’s deficiency. It is also suitable as a detoxifying agent, which enhances the overall stamina.

Iodine

Information

Iodine - more than two-thirds of iodine is stored in the thyroid gland and it is a component produced by it hormones - thyroxine and triiodothyronine, which are essential in the metabolism of proteins, carbohydrates and minerals and regulating the processes of growth, causing it usefulness in sports supplementation. It is also the ingredient of weight loss products. Regulates and controls body temperature. Natural source of acquisition of iodine are: bladderwrack, seafood, sea fish and onion and vegetables growing in soil containing this element and most of all iodized salt ..
Deficiency of iodine in the body cause hypothyroidism, and consequently overweight, mental slowing (cretinism inclusive). It
is the cause of a goitre. Iodine deficiency can be caused by rhodanates and polyphenols (e.g. contained in cabbage and cauliflower), hemagglutinin found in legumes.
Excess iodine can result in inhibition of thyroid hormone synthesis (this
happens in a small percentage of cases).
Dosage: Treatment of iodine should be done under medical supervision. Daily demand for adults is 150 mcg. For pregnant women daily demand increases to 175 mcg.
