Now Foods Plant Enzymes is a dietary supplement containing a complex formula of plant (100% vegan) digestive enzymes that work in a wide pH range, are adjusted to digesting proteins (normal and special protease - stable in an acidic environment, papain, bromelain), carbohydrates (amylase), fat (lipase), dietary fibre (cellulase) and milk sugar - lactose (lactase).

Oral supplementation of plant digestive enzymes can be helpful in the situations when the production of own pancreatic, intestinal or digestive enzymes is insufficient, as well as when one wants their tissue to regenerate faster during ongoing post-traumatic convalescence or after a heavy physical effort in competitive sports.

Proteases (proteolytic enzymes) - in other words, enzymes for protein digestion; a group of the most common enzymes in the organism; they catalyse the process of breaking peptide bonds (proteolysis) either inside a peptide chain (endopeptidase) or at the end of the chain (exopeptidase).

The following belong to endogenic proteolytic enzymes of the gastrointestinal system:
- pepsin, i.e. a compound of digestive juice which breaks down proteins into polypeptides and oligopeptides; it can only take place in an acidic environment
- trypsin and chymotrypsin, i.e. compounds of pancreatic juice which breaks down proteins into polypeptides and, in turn, into oligopeptides; it takes place in a basal environment of the duodenum
- peptidases (carboxypeptidases, aminopeptidases and dipeptidases) which break polypeptides, oligopeptides, tripeptides and dipeptides down to the final product - simple amino acids

What other benefits do proteolytic enzymes hide?
According to recent research reports, externally provided proteolytic enzymes (particularly bromelain) can be absorbed to the circulatory system while maintaining a full enzymatic activity (when taken between meals).

In that form, they have an anti-inflammatory, analgesic and immunostimulating effect (they activate macrophages and granulocytes), as well as actively take part in the process of blood coagulation (they break down blood clots).

Amylases (diastase) - amylolytic enzymes which break down carbohydrates (polysaccharides: starch, glycogen) into smaller molecules (usually disaccharides), such as maltose. In the human organism they also demonstrate an anti-inflammatory and antihistamine effect, e.g. amylase inhibits the secretion of histamine by basophilic leukocytes. Currently, research is conducted as to what role they play in allergies, asthma and bronchopulmonary dysplasia.

Lipases - enzymes which digest fat, i.e. catalyse the reaction of the hydrolysis of ester bonds present between glycerol and fatty acids. In a human organism, they carry out their tasks in the stomach, the pancreas and the small intestine.

Cellulases - a group of enzymes which break down cellulose (a kind of indigestible fibre).

Lactase - an enzyme which breaks down lactose (milk sugar) into galactose and glucose. The deficiency of this enzyme causes a group of symptoms referred to as lactose intolerance.

Papain - a proteolytic enzyme obtained from the leaves and unripe fruits of papaya (papaw or pawpaw); the enzyme is extraordinarily similar to human pepsin. Like bromelain, it takes part in protein breakdown.

Moreover, it destroys parasites (ascaris lumbricoides, whipworms, pinworms) present in the gastrointestinal tract, and has a microbicidal and antifungal effect. It can also regulate the functioning of the immune system by stimulating the production of cytokines and directing the reactive forms of oxygen to destroy cancer cells.

Bromelain - a mixture of proteolytic enzymes obtained from a pineapple extract; it is also known as cysteine protease. It breaks down peptide bonds (digests proteins) both in the stomach and the small intestine, thanks to which it improves protein digestion and amino acid absorption. It is extraordinarily effective when it comes to digesting casein and gelatine.

Bromelain reduces inflammations in the organism (including those that resulted from sports injuries and surgical operations), arthritis, as well as rhinotracheitis and upper respiratory tract infections in children. It helps to clear a congested nose, facilitates breathing and alleviates cough.

It also shows an anti-parasitic and immunoregulatory characteristics and improves life quality in people with cancer by reducing the symptoms of a neoplasm.

Scientists have proven that a supplement with bromelain, papain and fungal proteases can accelerate muscle regeneration after training through the stimulation of the breakdown of damaged tissues.

To sum up, Now Foods Plant Enzymes is a dietary supplement recommended particularly for people who have problems with digestion. It is also beneficial for sportspeople and those who are on a high-protein diet. Administering it in the cases of chronic infections, atherosclerosis, asthma and allergies is also worth considering.
