Collagen – it is a fundamental component building a connective tissue. Collagen proteins forming tissues are composed of four amino acids: glycine, proline, hydroxyproline and hydroxylysine, which are formed from proline and lysine in enzymatic processes that require the presence of vitamin C. As the main component of tendons, it gives them a high resistance to traction, while in the skin it is responsible for its elasticity, smoothness and firmness – the loss of collagen causes wrinkles. The collagen fibers constitute 25% of the intercellular substance in the bone tissue. In the elderly, after 45 years of age, there is a reduction in the synthesis of collagen, which weakens bones and physical strength – they become fragile and more breakable.
Collagen of type I is the most abundant protein in the organism and is a key component of the skin to which it imparts flexibility, firmness and resistance to traction. Collagen of type III in turn, is common in the tissues of the cardiovascular system and is involved in wound healing. The lack of such collagen causes arterial stiffness, which contributes to cardiovascular disease, including atherosclerosis. Researchers proved that supplementation of collagen hydrolyzate manifests protective properties and reduces symptoms of pain caused by injuries and overloads. Collagen of type I was clinically effective in the case of osteoarthritis – it exhibited anti-inflammatory and anti-arthritic properties. Another study confirmed that the use of collagen helps rebuild joint cartilage. The researchers also suggest that collagen hydrolyzate rejuvenates the skin and protects it from UVB sun rays. It prevents the formation of wrinkles by stimulating the synthesis of collagen of type I and IV in the skin tissue.
