Hepatica Triphala is a dietary supplement with a blend of standardised extracts from three Ayurvedic herbs in equal proportions: Amla (Emblica officinalis), Haritaki (Terminalia chebula) and Bibhitaki (Terminalia bellirica). One capsule provides 310 mg of extract, including 124 mg of tannins. Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic agent with a major beneficial impact on the health and function of the digestive system by supporting digestive processes.

Amla (E.officinalis), also known as Indian gooseberry, is a fruit tree growing in India. It is a popular ingredient of many herbal Ayurvedic blends and natural cosmetics. When it comes to biochemical composition, amla fruit is rich in vitamin C and E, tannins (tannoids), mainly emblicanin A and B, ellagic and gallic acid, quercetin (flavone), phytosterols, e.g. beta-sitosterol and stigmasterol, and carotenoids: lutein and beta-carotene.

The abundance of organic substances in amla accounts for its unique pharmacological properties and effects. The content of compounds with antioxidant activity (vitamin C and E and tannins) determines its neuroprotective properties and contributes to reducing levels of free radicals in the body whose excess may cause many diseases (especially diseases of affluence) and also speed up the body’s ageing processes. Tannins inhibit the enzyme xanthine oxidase, thereby capturing free radicals. They show, among other things, an immunostimulant, anticancer and antimutagenic effect.

It has been demostrated that amla has an impact on reducing acetylcholinesterase (AChE) levels in the body. It is the enzyme breaking down acetylcholine, one of the primary neurotransmitters which is formed, among other things, during body’s ageing processes and dementia. AchE inhibitors are used as drugs for dementia (e.g. Alzheimer’s disease). Moreover, amla is said to have a nootropic effect – tests on animals have confirmed an improvement in cognitive functions, in particular memory. In combination with antioxidant substances, amla improves thus mental performance and is an effective tool in the fight against the body’s ageing processes.

Haritaki (T.chebula) means “the one that takes away diseases”. It is a popular Ayurvedic plant with long tradition, especially in the treatment of digestive diseases. It contains tannins, anthraquinones (sennoside A) and triterpenoid glycosides.

Haritaki is a leading Ayurvedic agent for digestive problems. The content od tannins is critical to supporting intestinal cleansing and relieving diarrhoea. Sennosides treat constipation. Hikari fruit reduces bloating, inflammation in the mucosa of the digestive tract and irritation caused by parasites (Shigella, E. histolytica). They are also used for leaky gut syndrome.

Haritaki shows hypolydemic properties. On the basis of studies on animals, haritaki lowers levels of triglyceride, total cholesterol, atherogenic LDL and VDL cholesterol and free fatty acids as well as boosts HDL cholesterol levels. An improvement in the lipid profile is extremely important to prevent diseases of affluence.

Bibhitaki (T.bellirica) is a plant whose fruit is rich in tannins and sterols (beta-sitosterol). Bibhitaki fruit is used mainly for respiratory diseases, such as cough, asthma and laryngitis. It has a mucolytic and astringent effect on the muscosa, especially in the lungs and intestines. In addition, bibhitaki fruit normalises digestive function, increases appetite, reduces bloating and improves intestinal motility. Bihitaki is also reported to help prevent the development of kidney stone disease.

To sum up, Hepatica Triphala is a traditional Ayurvedic agent which is a simple herbal blend with unique properties, used to treat numerous diseases for ages. The content of standardised extracts ensures the product’s efficacy. The dietary supplement is recommended especially to individuals struggling with digestive problems, wanting to lose excess weight or fighting overweight and to aid in detoxifying the body, support the immune system, increase vitality and fitness and prevent diseases of affluence.
