Now Foods Bromelain is a dietary supplement that includes bromelain - a natural extract from pineapple. Very high enzymatic activity (as much as 2400 GDU!) guarantees high effectiveness and adequate potency.

The product is recommended mainly to improve the function of the digestive system, but the spectrum of its health-promoting properties is much wider. It allows you to use the supplement also to strengthen immunity, accelerate recovery after injuries and trauma, and as part of the prevention of cardiovascular diseases.

Bromelain is a natural enzyme extracted from the fruit or stems of pineapple, belonging to the group of proteinases. Their main task is to hydrolyze peptide bonds, which is why bromelain is said to be a protein-digesting enzyme. The main component of bromelain is the proteolytic-sulfhydryl fraction. Other active compounds include phosphatases, glucosidases, cellulases and glycoproteins. The synergistic action of all the substances contained in bromelain is responsible for its therapeutic properties, rather than one specific factor that could be isolated.

Improving digestion
Using bromelain with a meal, especially one containing protein, improves the efficiency of the digestive process. This is important because undigested protein not only causes gastrointestinal problems, but is also responsible for food allergies and increased symptoms of autoimmune diseases.

It is widely believed that most orally ingested enzymes are destroyed in the acidic environment of the stomach. This is not the case with bromelain, which retains its properties over a wide pH range, and its action is not limited to the stomach, but extends to the small intestine as well.

Bromelain can take over the functions of pepsin (an essential component of gastric juice, responsible for proper digestion) and trypsin (a pancreatic enzyme involved in protein breakdown) in situations of their deficiency in the body. It is successfully used as a supplementary digestive enzyme in pancreatic insufficiency.

Immune enhancement
Bromelain, like other systemic enzymes, modulates the work of the immune system. It is responsible for the production of cytokines, especially from the interleukin group. It is on these that the immune response largely depends.

Bromelain weakens the biofilm produced by pathogenic microorganisms for protection against agents that could destroy them. By damaging the biofilm, they can be easily engulfed by specialized cells of the immune system called macrophages.

Anti-inflammatory properties
Bromelain exhibits potent anti-inflammatory effects. It regulates the secretion of pro-inflammatory and anti-inflammatory prostaglandins, thus preventing the spread of inflammation, eliminating the swelling and pain that often accompany it. It is very useful in the treatment of soft tissue injuries and trauma, such as muscle strains, tendons.

Anticoagulant properties
Bromelain has an anti-aggregative effect. It stops pathological clumping of platelets, which leads to the formation of dangerous clots. In addition, it reduces the excessive adhesion of platelets to the endothelial cells lining the arteries. Exhibits fibrinolytic activity - stimulates fibrinolysis processes, leading to the breakdown of the clot. Prevents thrombosis and narrowing of the arteries, reduces the risk of coronary artery disease.

Antibiotic properties
Bromelain has antibiotic activity. It is effective especially against infections in the upper respiratory tract - sinuses, bronchi. By reducing the density of mucus, it can be used for asthma. Bromelain can be used together with antibiotics - it facilitates the absorption of penicillin and amoxicillin.

In summary, Bromelain is a supplement with a wide range of uses. It is recommended especially for those staying on high-protein diets and athletes who consume higher than standard amounts of protein due to their high protein needs. An additional benefit of supplementation will be the support of recovery processes after possible injuries or trauma.
