Now Foods Curcumin is a dietary supplement containing a high quality extract from the rhizomes of the long-stemmed thistle (Curcuma longa L.) standardized to contain 95% of curcuminoids with high biological activity, i.e. curcumin (yellow pigment), demethylcurcumin and bisdemethylcurcumin, the vast majority of which is curcumin.
Turmeric(Curcuma longa L. - long spurge) - used as a spice; a species of perennial herb native to India; contains many biologically active substances: curcuminoids, ferulic acid and essential oil, including turmerone, bisabolene, guaiana, zingiberene, xanthorisal, curcumen. It exhibits antioxidant, anti-inflammatory, anti-cancer, anti-angiogenic, antiviral, antibacterial, antifungal, cholagogue, cholagogue, diastolic, dissolving bile deposits, regulating digestion, stimulating the secretion of digestive juices and enzymes, hepatoprotective and anti-atherosclerotic properties.
Curcumin(diferuylmethane) - the main curcuminoid and constituent of turmeric; an extremely promising therapeutic substance in the research phase; a natural polyphenolic compound derived from the rhizome of the long thistle; exhibits a wide variety of biological activities, i.e., affecting transcription factors, growth factors, receptors, cytokines and numerous enzymes, including kinases. Black pepper increases its absorption by about 20 times.
Curcumin prevents atherosclerosis
Curcumin protects the cardiovascular system multidirectionally, acting directly on the cause of systemic disorders. It manifests its antioxidant activity through its ability to neutralize free oxygen radicals and peroxides, inhibit the peroxidation of lipids and low-density lipoproteins (LDL), thereby preventing the formation of atherosclerotic lesions.
In addition, it improves the production of prostacyclin PGI2, which inhibits the clumping (aggregation) of platelets, has a diastolic effect on blood vessels and lowers blood pressure.
This remarkable compound counteracts myocardial ischemia and reduces post-infarction effects by reducing xanthine oxidase and myeloperoxidase activity, free radical generation and lipid peroxidation. At the same time, it increases the activity of antioxidant enzymes, i.e. SOD (superoxide dismutase) GPx (selenocysteine-containing glutathione peroxidase), glutathione S-transferase and catalase.
Curcumin against cancer
Curcumin, or turmeric's yellow pigment, is a particular ingredient that shows high anti-inflammatory and antioxidant potential. Studies suggest that it may be useful in preventing as well as treating many types of cancer: skin cancer, lung cancer, esophageal cancer, oral cancer, head and neck cancer, stomach cancer, pancreatic cancer, small intestine cancer, liver cancer, colon cancer, bladder cancer, prostate cancer, cervical cancer, breast cancer and lymphoma.
Extensive scientific research has proven that curcumin clearly slows or completely inhibits the growth of cancer cells. What's more, it improves the effectiveness of radiotherapy and chemotherapy here, or makes it possible to use lower doses in these therapies. Its effect is particularly strong when combined with other antioxidants such as quercetin.
Digestive system
Turmeric stimulates the secretion of bile, facilitates its flow through the bile ducts, stimulates the secretion of gastrin, secretin and pancreatic enzymes, has a diastolic, antibacterial and mildly anti-inflammatory effect.
It is excellent against Helicobacter Pylori responsible for the formation of stomach ulcers. It counteracts bloating, constipation, feelings of fullness, digestive disorders, inflammation of the gallbladder and bile ducts, and gallstones.
Liver
Scientists have proven in experiments that turmeric has a hepatoprotective effect - it can protect liver cells from toxins, and can even help regenerate the cells of this organ.
Joints
Curcumin, as one of the bioactive components of turmeric, inhibits degenerative processes in the joints through a pronounced anti-inflammatory effect, which is of particular importance for those dealing with rheumatism, or degenerative changes in the musculoskeletal system, as well as sports injuries.
