Selenium Selenium

Source Naturals Selenium is a dietary supplement which is a source of selenium derived from selenium yeast with 200 mcg of this microelement per capsule. Selenium is a trace element necessary for normal development of the body and antioxidant protection. Its deficiency leads to serious health disorders and problems.

Selenium belongs to trace elements (microelements). The body’s demand for selenium is low. However, it is very important to meet these requirements. The microelement is an integral part of many selenium-dependent enzymes and selenoproteins which are involved in many biochemical pathways, reproductive processes, functioning of the immune system and normal brain function. It is considered an anticancer agent. Decreased selenium levels are associated with an increased incidence of cancer, cardiovascular diseases, inflammation and premature ageing.

Selenium is a component of selenium-dependent glutathione peroxidase and is thus a part of four isoenzymes. This enzyme is an important element of the cellular antioxidant system. Normal blood serum selenium levels ensure an optimal response of glutathione peroxidase. Glutathione peroxidase has the ability to reduce toxic peroxides which are by-products of metabolic processes. Neutralisation and detoxification processes of lipid peroxides are especially important since they induce damage to lipids, cell membranes, proteins and DNA and increase the risk of liver damage and cell mutations. A decrease in selenium and glutathione peroxidase levels is observed, among other things, in individuals suffering from rheumatoid arthritis, psoriasis and most inflammation.

Selenium promotes the activity of glutathione, a component of glutathione peroxidase and also the most important detoxifying element of the body. The highest concentrations are found in the liver where it helps remove toxins. Glutathione is conjugated with xenobiotics in phase II biotransformation reactions. The conjugation of xenobiotics helps remove from the body or neutralise, among other things, free radicals, pesticides, drugs, hormones, heavy metals (mercury, lead and aluminium). Antioxidant capacity of the liver depends directly from levels of glutathione and its deficiency contributes to incomplete metabolism of xenobiotics.

Selenium supplementation may be helpful in the treatment of hypothyroidism and Hashimoto’s disease. There is plenty of scientific studies that show selenium supplementation is justified in the abovementioned diseases. Nowadays, disorders of the thyroid gland are believed to be one of the most frequent autoimmune diseases.  The role of selenium in thyroid function consists in the activity of selenoenzymes in the endocrine system. The active site of iodothyronine deiodinases includes selenium. These enzymes have a key role in the coversion of thyroid hormones. By eliminating iodine, iodothyronine deiodinases catalyse thyroxine conversion into triiodothyronine and subsequently diiodothyronine.

Selenium may be a part of prevention and support for the treatment of neurodegenerative diseases. The most common ground for neurodegenerative processes is oxidative stress and inflammation in the body. Oxidative stress contributes to the development of dementia or Alzheimer’s disease. The exposure of cell structures – proteins, lipids and DNA – to free radicals results in their damage. Because of strong antioxidant properties, selenium is said to be a potential neuroprotective agent. Studies have been conducted so far on animals which have shown that selenium has the ability to inhibit oxidative stress in neurons, thereby protecting them from neurodegenerative processes.

To sum up, Source Naturals Selenium is a dietary supplement recommended especially to individuals with selenium deficiency, suffering from thyroid dysfunction and autoimmune diseases, exposed to environmental pollution and taking medications regularly, as well as for overall strengthening of health  and the body’s immunity.

Selenium

Information

Selenium (element, chemical symbol Se, atomic no. 34, from chalcogenide, it is present in several allotropic forms). It is supplied the body with food in the form of seleno-amino acids (selenomethionine - gathering supplies, and selenocysteine – a component of glutathione peroxidase, deiodinase and seleno-proteins). Regulates the functioning of the thyroid gland. It affects the growth and development, including sexual development (by increasing production and sperm motility). It affects the flexibility of the tissue, removes some of the toxins from the body and destroys cancer cells and reduces the severity of menopause in women. Natural products containing selenium are seafood (sea fish, oysters, bladderwrack) and vegetable products (broccoli, onions, wheat germ, bran, tomatoes) and animal products (poultry, eggs). It is also included in the composition of vitamin-mineral and mineral supplements. Selenium supplementation is recommended as a dietary supplement of active people having diet poor in this element, and as a factor increasing the body's immunity.
Selenium deficiency increases the risk of developing cancer and heart disease. Symptoms of selenium deficiency are: cardiomyopathy, growth stoppage,
disorders of detoxification processes which may lead to damage to the kidneys and liver.
An excess of selenium can lead to selenosis (the disease, the symptoms are: loss of hair, nail cracks, lesions).
daily
demand of selenium for pregnant women 65 mcg; nursing mothers 75 mcg; men 7 mcg.
