Swanson Boron from Albion® Bororganic Glycine is a dietary supplement containing boron in an innovative form of Albion® amino acid chelate. Boron in the form of glycine chelate is stable, resistant to low pH of gastric juice and is very well absorbed by the body. The product effectively supports bone health, contributes to the improvement of cognitive functions and supports hormonal balance in both women and men.

Boron is not a popular ingredient, it belongs to the group of micronutrients, i.e. elements found in the body in trace amounts (the need for micronutrients is no more than 100 mg per day). Despite this, microelements fulfill many important tasks in the body and are necessary for its proper functioning.

The main role of boron is participation in the metabolism of bone tissue. According to the researchers, boron is most likely involved in the transformation of 25-hydroxy-cholecalciferol which is one of the forms of vitamin D, into 1,25-dihydroxycholecalciferol (calcitriol) - a form characterized by the greatest activity and strength of action. First of all, calcitriol is the key regulator of the body's calcium and phosphate metabolism, conditioning normal bone mineralization, and besides, it has a pleiotropic effect on other systems.

Boron supplementation is helpful in preventing the development of osteoporosis. Boron protects against the loss of calcium from the body by preventing bone demineralization. In a study conducted on postmenopausal women, oral supplementation of 3 mg of boron per day reduced urinary calcium excretion by as much as 44%! Calcium is the basic bone component. Increased urinary calcium excretion due to, e.g. limited absorption, affects insufficient bone mineralization and bone decalcification, increasing the risk of the development of osteoporosis.

Boron has immunomodulatory effects and mobilizes the body's defence mechanisms. The studies demonstrated the stimulatory effect of boron on the growth of T cell population (CD4 antigen) and B (CD19 antigen) and the secretion of proinflammatory cytokines - IL-6, IL-1β, TNF-α and CRP (C Reactive Protein). In this way, boron plays a role in the immune response of the body against various types of infections, mobilizing it to fight the pathogenic factor. The influence of boron-enhanced immune response on the destruction of cancer cells is also suggested.

Boron may increase testosterone levels in men. In the bodybuilder world, boron preparations function as testosterone boosters. Although the exact mechanism of action has not been discovered, it is believed that boron may contribute to the increase of steroid hormones such as testosterone or β-estradiol. In an animal model, it was found that increased boron supply resulted in increased levels of vitamin D and testosterone in the blood.

Boron supports hormonal balance in women. Boron has been shown to have an effect on estrogen activity. During the clinical trial carried out on postmenopausal women, there was an increase in 17-β-estradiol - a hormone belonging to estrogen. After the menopause, estradiol levels in blood are significantly reduced. Estrogenic hormones directly affect bone condition - they stimulate osteoblasts, while inhibiting osteoclasts. The correct concentration of estradiol is needed to ensure optimal metabolic changes in bone tissue, and its drop below the critical value poses a high risk of osteoporosis development.

Boron affects optimal cognitive functions, including long- and short-term memory. The literature states that relatively short-term limitation of the boron supply results in significantly reduced manual efficiency, visual-motor coordination, the ability to focus attention, and the deterioration of long-term and short-term memory. The most likely cause of this action is the relationship of boron with the metabolism of other minerals, including calcium, magnesium and phosphorus, the effect of this element on the metabolism of glucose, triacylglycerols or the production of insulin.

There are several significant signs of a boron deficiency in the organism. It is believed that deficiency of this element may cause abnormal calcium and magnesium metabolism, hormonal disorders as well as contribute to the development of osteoporosis, arthritis, hyperthyroidism and neurological disorders.

To sum up, Swanson Boron from Albion® Bororganic Glycine is a dietary supplement recommended for menopausal women as the osteoporosis prevention. It can also support bone health, stabilize hormonal balance, improve cognitive functions and build muscle mass.
