Type II Collagen Complex Type II Collagen Complex

Jarrow Type II Collagen Complex is a natural dietary supplement containing highly bioavailable collagen type II coming from chicken sternum cartilage. The preparation positively influences the state of joints and strengthens the structure of skin, hair and nails.

Collagen belongs to the group of fibrillar proteins and occurs in the majority of tissues and organs of the organism. Collagen proteins constitute 1/3 of all proteins of the system and appear among others in bones, cartilages, skin, ligaments, tendons and also in the cornea. Collagen mainly plays the role of the component responsible for maintaining proper structural integrity of connective tissue, its flexibility and resistance to stretching.

Unfortunately, along with age, the intensity of collagen synthesis drops and by the same token, elastin production decreases. These compounds not only positively influence the state of joints, but also provide skin with elasticity and flexibility. Therefore, it is worth taking care of proper collagen supply in order to ensure proper joint function and maintain young appearance of skin for longer.

Collagen structure – collagen superhelix
Collagens have a unique structure, which contains considerable amounts of amino acids (i.a. glycine, proline, hydroxyproline). The basic element of the structure of collagen proteins are 3 levorotatory polypeptide chains, which by winding around the common axis create the so called line – collagen dextrorotatory superhelix. By maintaining natural spatial structure of superhelix, collagen may demonstrate its biological activity and it high resistance to the activity of proteases (e.g. trypsin, chymotrypsin, pepsin).

The role of collagen proteins
Collagen plays the key role in maintaining the integrity of tissues and organs. Additionally, it interacts with the receptors responsible for the processes of adhesion, differentiating and growth of cells. The role of collagen proteins in remedial mechanisms of tissues and the processes of wound healing is also significant.

Collagen type II in articular cartilage dysfunction prophylaxis
Articular cartilage is a tissue characterized by resilience, elasticity and high resistance to friction. It is responsible for protecting bones against mechanical injuries resulting from excessive joint burden and it supports proper and casual movement in joints. It is built primarily of cells (chondrocytes) and extracellular matrix, which in turn consists of proteoglycans, surrounded by the network of collagen fibers.

Osteoarthritis is one of the most frequent chronic diseases of the musculoskeletal system. This disease is caused by the disorders consisting in destabilization and changes in the balance between the processes of degradation and synthesis of cartilage and subchondral bone structure.

As a result of the activity of oxidative stress, which may increase with age, it may lead to serious damages also on the level of articular cartilage. According to the observation of patients with developed osteoarthritis, the increase of the concentration of free oxygen radicals with simultaneously limiting the activity of superoxide dismutase (SOD) – an enzyme being the component of antioxidant barrier, may be related to the intensification of the processes leading to the damages of articular cartilage and especially their negative influence on the structure of collagen and proteoglycans. The excess of reactive oxygen forms destroys proteins belonging to extracellular matrix and has inhibiting effect on the synthesis of new collage fibers.

Supplementation with collage type II may constitute an effective element of both prophylaxis and treatment of articular cartilage dysfunctions. It has been observed that this substance may facilitate anabolic processes taking place in articular cartilage and support maintaining proper balance between the synthesis and degradation of collagen homeostasis of extracellular matrix. Moreover, using collagen may positively influence reducing pain symptoms, stiffness and joint mobility impairment, which is positively reflected in life quality among people dealing with osteoarthritis.

Summing up, Jarrow Type II Collagen Complex is a dietary supplement addressed to people, whose joints are exposed to excessive burden resulting from i.a. regular and repetitive overload (sportsmen), increased pressure on joint surfaces (obese people) and decreased surface of articular cartilage subjected to strains (elderly people).

The supplement may be used after the age of 25, as then articular cartilage may start to undergo the process of desynchronizing, which in turn may lead to the dominance of the processes of degradation over the processes of biosynthesis. It may result in the excessive collagen decline, which is reflected in the negative influence on the state of skin and nails and also dangerous degeneration of joints and bones and other dysfunctions, e.g. premature aging of soft tissues, disorders of blood vessels and lymphatic vessels.

Collagen

Information

Collagen is a major component that builds connective tissue (tendons, ligaments cartilage, bone, and blood vessels) from the group of fibrous proteins (i.e. scleroprotein), representing a quarter of the content of protein in the body. It is composed of amino acids (glycine, hydroxylysine, hydroxyproline and proline). Distinguished are eight types of collagen located in different parts of the human body. The source of the acquisition is gelatin (a component of the connective tissue of animal origin). It occurs most frequently in the form of processed collagen hydrolyzate characterized by a high and a good absorbency of amino acids. Recommended in sports supplementation and physically active people, as well as during convalescence after injuries and certain diseases. Available as mono-preparation supplement or of multi-compound supplement (usually also containing chondroitin, hyaluronic acid, and ascorbic acid).
Dosage: 10-20 g per day.
