Black Currant Oil Black Currant Oil

Black Currant Oil is a dietary supplement, the component of which is black currant seed oil, which contains in its composition two fatty acids – gamma-linoleic acid (GLA) and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). The presence of these two valuable unsaturated essential fatty acids (EFTs) decides about the strength of this product’s effect, as they demonstrate a wide array of prophylactic and pro-health applications.

Because of the large content of polyphenols and vitamin C, black currant (Ribes nigrum) fruits are characterized by strong antioxidant properties. It has been proven that this plant has anticancer effect, normalizes glycaemia, reduces cholesterol level in blood, limits flu virus proliferation and the increase of Helicobacter pylori bacteria. Anthocyanins – flavonoids contained in black currant may be used to support glaucoma and shortsightedness treatment, as they positively influence visual acuity.

Because of the content of unsaturated essential fatty acids, black currant seed oil is thought to be a product with incredible pro-health value and it is used in the therapy of circulatory system diseases, rheumatoid arthritis (RA), psoriasis and in preventing atopic dermatitis (AD).

Black currant seeds contain considerable amounts of polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) and these are mainly: linoleic acid (LA) and alpha-linoleic acid (ALA). Both these fatty acids have to be provided with a diet, as human organism cannot synthesize them. A fact that is worth attention is that in black currant seed oil the mutual proportion between the acids n-6 and n-3 is quite beneficial: 4:1. The content of PUFA acids n-3: ALA and stearidonic acid is 15%, so this oil is on a par in this respect with fish oils. It is worth adding that the content of vitamin E in black current seed oil is 2 times higher than in rapeseed oil and moreover, it also contains considerable amounts of sterols (even 82%).

LA is a precursor of γ-linoleic acid (GLA). Many studies show that unsaturated essential fatty acids play an important role in preventing many chronic diseases, including mainly circulatory system disorders. Moreover, it is also known that GLA fulfills an important function in preventing allergic diseases and ailments with inflammations. These are, however, not the only pro-health benefits of this oil. Thanks to the content of carotenoids, flavonoids, phytosterols, tocochromanols, and phenolic acids, it demonstrates antiatherosclerotic, anticancer, anti-inflammatory and antioxidant effects.

The influence of black currant seed oil on the human organism
In the study on laboratory animals fed by high-fat and low-fiber diet, which were administered black currant seed oil, the concentration of triglycerides was lowered, the concentration of HDL cholesterol was increased and the deposits of liver fats were decreased. These results were partially confirmed in the study on women, in which the influence of fish oil and black currant seed oil on lipid profile were compared. It turned out that the application of black currant seed oil to a higher extent increased GLA concentration, triglycerides and cholesterol esters as well as reduced LDL cholesterol level.

Polyphenols present in this oil reduce the concentration of IL-4 and IL-13, which stimulate the production of eotaxine-3 – a protein influencing unbeneficial changes and destroying respiratory tract epithelium.

It is suspected that because of the participation of GLA in the anti-inflammatory activity, the application of black currant seed oil may find justification in the treatment of such skin diseases as psoriasis and acne. It turns out that applying this oil in the therapy of RA results in the considerable improvement of the state of patients in whom the reduction of pain and joint sensitivity is observed.

It is believed that high frequency of AD in younger children may be connected to the insufficient intake of essential unsaturated fatty acids. Thanks to this observation, black currant seed oil may be used as prophylaxis and therapy of AD. In infants suffering from this disease, in comparison to healthy children, lower concentration of unsaturated EFAs in blood serum is observed and unbeneficial ratio of n3- and n-6 acids as well as lower amount of GLA. Additionally, this oil supplementation increases the ability of the organism to produce anti-inflammatory eicosanoids – thromboxane, leukotrienes and prostaglandins which fulfill and important function in regulating skin inflammations and immunological reactions.

In the fetal period, the immune system is being shaped and unsaturated essential fatty acids are indispensable in this process. Providing PUFA acids during pregnancy causes immunological effect, as it influences the reduction of IL-4 concentration engaged in the creation of inflammatory areas and the increase of IFN-γ concentration (interferon) in the mother’s milk. The amount of interferon – protein launching the defense mechanisms of the immune system, in the mothers of children with AD is lower that among women having healthy offspring.

Summing up, Now Foods Black Currant Oil is a natural dietary supplement, the intake of which is not connected to the occurrence of any side effects. It constitutes a great source of unsaturated essential fatty acids, which contain a wide range of prophylactic and pro-health properties. The preparation is recommended especially in order to strengthen the immune system work, support therapies of chronic inflammations and as a means supporting maintaining health of the cardiovascular system.

Calories

Information

Calories are the conventional name of the unit expressing the energy value of food, the demand and energy expenditure in human body, which in fact is 1 kilocalorie (1 kcal). 1 kilocalorie is the amount of thermal energy required to heat 1 g of water and 1 degree Celsius. The SI unit of thermal energy is 1 joule (1J), equal to approximately 4,185 kcal.
The energy value is determined by the chemical composition of the food product, by means of the so-called. physiological equivalents. Most often Atwater equivalent is used: ratio for protein 4 kcal / g, for carbohydrates 4kcal / g, and for fat - 9kcal / g.
The energy value carried out with the so-called. "Caloric bomb" is equivalent to the physical energy, amounting to 4.1 kcal per 1 g carbohydrate to 5.65 kcal per 1 g protein, 9.45 kcal per 1 g of fat.
Nutritional value, determines the suitability of a food product for realizing life functions of human, the higher it is - the higher bioavailability and lower quantity for consumption for obtaining the effects.

Fat

Information

Fat is an essential nutrient plant and animal organisms. Because of the nutritional value and composition of fats are divided into: saturated (mono-saturated and multi-saturated fatty acids) and unsaturated fatty acids (including essential fatty acids - EFA). The group of lipids include lipids (triacylglycerols, waxes), complex fats (glycolipids, phospholipids), sterols and isoprenoids. Saturated fatty acids is a group of fatty acids having different carbon chain lengths, in which except for the carboxyl group, each of the carbon atoms is bound by a single bond. May adversely affect the lipid profile, so they can be used in limited quantities. Fats are a concentrated source of energy, with different flavours, facilitating the consumption and swallowing of food. They have building functions (part of cell membranes and co-create the white matter of the brain). EFAs are precursors of tissue hormones and biologically active compounds. The unsaturated fatty acids include fatty acids from the group Omega-3, Omega-6 and Omega-9 (the last digit indicates, on which, counting of the end of the chain, there is a double bond in the appropriate carbon chain. The essential fatty acids include: acids, medium-Omega-3 [n-3 ] included in EFAs [essential fatty acids], and long chain (eicosapentaenoic acid [EPA] and docosahexaenoic acid [DHA]) Omega-6 and Omega-9. the number indicates that the last double bond in the carbon chain is on the third from the end carbon atom. The acids from the omega 3 group are essential components of cell membranes, they are precursors of eicosanoids and biological activators. They must be combined with ingestion in suitable proportions of Omega-6 acids.
Dosage: Depending on demand and applied diet. It is generally accepted that fats should constitute 20-30% of the energy (calorie) of meals daily.
