Swanson Gymnema Sylvestre Leaf is s dietary supplement in the composition of which there is Gymnema sylvestre leaves extract – a tropical plant, which supports proper work of the pancreas, improves glucose metabolism and decreases appetite for sweets.

The preparation is recommended to people disposed to hypoglycemia, aiming at regulating sugar level in blood and strengthening insulin response. It may also be used in order to reduce body mass. Thanks to blocking the feeling of sweet taste, it facilitates quitting sweets and supports the fight with the pernicious addiction to sweet snacks. The supplementation also contributes to the improvement of lipid parameters.

Gymnema sylvestre is a plant coming from Asia, which is willingly used by local population because of its diuretic, anti-fever and anti-inflammatory properties. It has gained the largest popularity because of phenomenal abilities to inhibit the feeling of sweet taste and restoring glucose homeostasis.

For therapeutic purposes mainly the leaves of gymnema sylvestre are used, which are rich in triterpene glycosides, alkaloids and saponins. The most important, pharmacologically active component is gymnemic acid. A large role is also played by the remaining acids in the leaves: formic acid, tartaric acid and hydroxycitric acid as well as chromium and inositol.

Hypoglycemic effect
Gymnema sylvestre extracts have proven hypoglycemic effect. They slow down the secretion of sugar to the bloodstream and facilitate the utilization of glucose as the source of energy in the organism. The mechanism of their activity is based on the activation of glycolytic enzymes and stimulating the activity of enzymes from the group of phosphorylases. Additionally, gymnemic acid is an inhibitor of the enzymes of gluconeogenesis, hydrogenase and sorbitol.

The largest advantage of gymnema sylvestre is the fact, that it lowers glucose level in blood only when it is too high. In healthy people with proper sugar level, after the intake of gymnema sylvestre extracts, no unfavorable changes take place. Additionally, this plant protects from sudden sugar spikes after eating a lot of carbohydrates.

Clinical research carried out with the participation of healthy people and people suffering from diabetes type 2 proved that regular supplementation with gymnema sylvestre extracts helped to limit the amount of medicines taken and it certain cases drugs were no longer needed. When using gymnema sylvestre, sugar level in all the subjects (both sick and healthy) was stable and its values did not require any correction.

Insulin secretion normalization
Glucose-insulin metabolism modulation is possible also thanks to proper work of pancreas. Gymnema sylvestre supports the regeneration of all pancreatic islets. It intensifies the activity of b cells, by stimulating them to increase insulin production. Studies carried out on rodents proved that under the influence of gymnemic acid, the number of pancreatic islets and b cells doubled. Similar studies were carried out on patients with diabetes type I. They also ended with a success – among all the patients, regeneration of b cells took place and insulin secretion was increased.

It is also important that gymnema sylvestre contains a lot of chromium. This mineral is the component of GFT (Glucose Tolerance Factor) – the substance regulating the activity of the center of hunger and satiation and controlling insulin activity. Chromium inhibits intestinal sugar absorption, thanks to which it may be fully used in energy production in the organism.

Inhibiting appetite for sweets
Gymnema sylvestre limits appetite for sweet food. For this reason, Indians call this plant “sugar destroyer”. After eating the extracts from its leaves, the feeling of sweet taste is blocked for a few hours. Thanks to this, it is much easier to deal with the tendency to consume excessive amounts of sweets.

According to specialists, the structural composition of its molecules is responsible for such properties of gymnemic acid. They resemble glucose molecules, therefore after filling taste bud receptors, they make it impossible to activate them by sugar molecules. Another conception, confirmed by tests on rodents is related to the presence of the unique peptide in the leaves of gymnema sylvestre, called gurmarin. It is said to selectively inhibit reactions to sweet compounds.

Lipid profile improvement
In in vivo studies it was proven that gymnema sylvestre has hypolipemic effect and its effectiveness is comparable to synthetic drugs (e.g. clofibrate). Gymnema sylvestre extracts lower the level of triglycerides and cholesterol – both total cholesterol and unbeneficial low-density protein fraction (LDL).

Summing up, Gymnema sylvestre is a perfect choice for those who deal with tendencies to hypoglycemia and unstable sugar level in blood. It may also be used by people aiming at body mass reduction, those who eat excessive amounts of carbohydrates or just those who want to limit the amount of sweets in a diet. Plant origin of the supplement guarantees effectiveness and safety for the organism.
