Glutathione, Cysteine & C by Life Extension is a dietary supplement containing reduced glutathione (GSH) at the dose of 50mg, l-cysteine in the form of cysteine hydrochloride at the dose of 200 mg and vitamin C in the form of ascorbic acid at the dose of 500 mg in one capsule.

L-glutathione is an organic chemical compound from the group of tripeptides, built of amino acid residues, cysteine and glycine, contains sulfur. It is one of the strongest antioxidants produced by the organism. Its highest amounts are concentrated in the liver, but also in kidneys and eye ball. It is responsible for detoxification mechanisms, transport of amino acids and production of coenzymes. It is utilized in lymphocytes proliferation, thanks to which the organism may fight with pathogens, i.e. bacteria, parasites or viruses. It increases glycogen supplies in the muscles, helps to reduces fatty tissue, decreases the symptoms of fatigue and increases the concentration of growth hormone in the plasma, which is helpful for sportsmen and physically active people.

L-cysteine is an organic chemical compound from the group of endogenous coded amino acids. It plays formative functions in the organism, is the component of structural proteins, e.g. skeletal muscles. Glutathione precursor, necessary for its proper production. At the same time, it supports proper functioning of the liver, influences nutrition of hair follicle and scalp, protects from the harmful influence of UV radiation. Cysteine is one of the ingredients of collagen, therefore it is responsible for elasticity of epidermis. A cysteine metabolite – N-acetyl-L-cysteine helps to remove heavy metals from the organism, i.e. cadmium or mercury and is used in severe cases of poisonings, e.g. with drugs.

Vitamin C is an organic chemical compound from the group of unsaturated polyhydric alcohols, which needs to be provided to the organism from outside. It is a strong antioxidant, facilitates iron assimilation and is essential in the synthesis of collagen. It strengthens immunological functions of the organism, facilitates wound healing and takes part in the synthesis of neurotransmitters. Its deficiency results in the occurrence of scurvy, a disease characterized by gum bleeding and tooth loss. It maintains glutathione in its reduced form.

Antioxidant activity

Glutathione, which is created with the participation of l-cysteine is the most important and the strongest antioxidant produced on its own by the organism. Maintaining the balance between the level of antioxidants and the amount of free radicals is essential to maintain health. The excess of reactive oxygen species (ROS) leads to a range of complications in the organism, e.g. it increases the risk of developing cancer, neurodegenerative diseases, asthma, cardiovascular problems and joint inflammation.

Large number of free radicals has a negative influence on the proper functioning of cellular mitochondria, which is reflected in the drop of energy, vital powers and increased feeling of fatigue and exhaustion.

Glutathione is essential to activate other antioxidants, e.g. vitamin C or E. Without the proper concentration of glutathione in blood, other antioxidants will not work properly.

Natural detox

Glutathione and l-cysteine are the key substances taking part in the processes of detoxification of the organism. They demonstrate properties binding heavy metals, i.e. lead or mercury, which leads to their elimination from the plasma.

Glutathione contains sulfur molecules, which exhibit strong antitoxic properties. They enable elimination of harmful substances from the organism, which come from food, decrease harmful effect of pesticides, toxins, chemical and nitrogenous compounds.

Due to the fact that the highest amounts of glutathione are concentrated in the liver, it helps in all detoxification processes. It is used in severe poisonings, e.g. with paracetamol, which in excessive amounts may lead to irreversible changes in the structure of hepatocytes – polygonal cells constituting structural elements of liver flesh.

Support for the immune system

The combination of glutathione, l-cysteine and vitamin C provides the organism with large potential, supporting defense processes of the organism. These substances support the immunity of the organism by participating in the production and proper functioning of lymphocytes – cells responsible for the fight with bacteria, viruses and parasites and support the activity of NK cells (Natural Killers), the large amount of which helps in destroying improper cells, e.g. cancer cells.

Numerous studies confirmed the correlation between the creation of certain disease entities and low concentration of glutathione in blood and this means that there is imbalance between antioxidant substances and free radicals and the organism is not able to deal with the harmful effects of reactive oxygen species. Its low concentration also leads to activating the enzyme iNOS (induced nitric oxide synthase), which promotes immunological attack on its own cells, leading to developing autoimmune diseases.

Benefits for sportsmen

During physical effort, human body can utilize even fifteen times more oxygen than during normal activities. Physical activity increases oxygen intake and intensifies many metabolic processes, therefore oxidative stress is a natural phenomenon taking place during physical exercises. Consequently, free radicals come into being, which wreak havoc in the organism – they contribute to inflammations and muscle damage, therefore it is so important to keep the level of our natural antioxidants constantly at high level.

Cells that need more energy mobilize mitochondria to more intensive work. Apart from producing essential energy, negative effects of these processes also may take place, e.g. excessive lipid peroxidation (fat oxidation) or reactions of transmitting electrons between atoms. These phenomena are especially counteracted by high concentration of antioxidants in the organism.

Increased physical effort exhausts the supplies of glutathione, which is used to inactivate reactive oxygen species during training. Its proper level, on the other hand, influences proper glycogen complementation, which is directly reflected in endurance-strength results and maintaining muscle mass. Moreover, it stimulates the production of the growth hormone, which helps in the synthesis of muscle tissue and reduction of fatty tissue. It also reduces the activity of cortisol, excessively high concentration of which during the day contributes to catabolic mechanisms and growth of adipocytes, especially around belly.

Glutathione along with L-cysteine are essential for protein synthesis. They take part in the mechanisms of transport of amino acids to cells and limit harmful influence of free radicals and the level of protein structures – the have anticatabolic effect.

Summing up, Glutathione, Cysteine & C is a dietary supplement with a wide spectrum of applications, exhibiting strong pro-health properties for the whole organism. It is especially recommended to people in the periods of increase physical effort and weak organism’s immunity.
