Activlab Glutamine Xtra is a supplement containing glutamine – an amino acid that is responsible for, among others, the proper metabolism of proteins, and additionally supports muscle regeneration. The factor that distinguishes the preparation from others containing glutamine is the addition of taurine. It is responsible for, among others, the transport of muscle creatine. The supplement comes in three delicious flavors.

L-Glutamine accounts for about 60% of the amino acids found in muscles. It plays the role of a "storage" and supports the transport of nitrogen to cells. It has been shown that long and intense exercises exhaust the levels of this amino acid. As a nitrogen carrier, L-Glutamine thus supports building of the muscle mass, in response to an increased protein synthesis stimulated by resistance training. Glutamine supplementation can also affect post-workout surge of one of the strongest anabolic hormones. It has been shown that the addition of only 2 grams of L-Glutamine after workout increased the level of plasma growth hormone.

In addition, it has been proven that the administration of L-Glutamine post-workout along with carbohydrates accelerates resynthesis of glycogen in muscles and reduces their soreness (i.e. DOMS), which in turn allows for a quicker return to training.

This amino acid has a protective effect on the branched-chain amino acids (BCAAs), whose levels come second after glutamine in muscle tissue. During various stressors acting on the body or as a result of mechanical muscle damage, a high level of glutamine protects the muscle fibers against breakdown. However, if such a breakdown occurs for some reasons, supplementation with L-Glutamine will effectively accelerate regeneration.

Administration of L-Glutamine also helps the body to excrete toxic ammonia produced as a result of digesting the amino acids. Elevated levels of ammonia are toxic for health and can cause neurological problems.

L-Glutamine is also a source of energy for enterocytes – intestinal cells, building the epithelium of the mucous membrane, which are responsible for the proper digestion and absorption of food. This is due to these cells that human body can make use of the ingredients contained in food, so their poor condition can lead to malabsorption and malnutrition.

L-Glutamine is also a "nutrient" for cells of the immune system – lymphocytes, macrophages and neutrophils. Therefore, an additional portion of L-Glutamine can help the body's immunity.

Taurine is a non-protein, sulfuric, biogenic amino acid that occurs mainly in animal tissues. The highest concentration of taurine occurs in the brain tissue, skeletal muscles and in the myocardium. Taurine displays the activity that supports the transport of creatine to muscle tissues. Taurine appears to have similar functions to L-Glutamine (storage and transport of nitrogen).

The anabolic properties of taurine are based on the mechanism of glucose metabolism, enhancing insulin production. Taurine affects insulin target tissues, in which it regenerates insulin receptors and suppresses insulin resistance. Therefore, it increases the sensitivity of muscle tissue and optimizes the sensitivity of adipose tissue to the anabolic activity of insulin.

L-glutamine - amino acid building endogenous proteins, glutamic acid amide.
