Apollo's Hegemony Capsaicin & Ginger is a dietary supplement containing standardized plant extracts – the ornamental pepper plant (Capsicum annum), which is the source of capsaicin, and ginger extract (Zingiber officinale). Commonly used as seasonings, capsaicin and ginger show a number of scientifically proven health-promoting properties.

Capsaicin is an alkaloid that is the main active substance of pepper, responsible for its spicy flavor (especially chili). The main mechanism of action of the compound is based on the interaction with the TRPV1 ion channel (transient receptor potential vanilloid 1). Activation of this channel by capsaicin is responsible not only for the burning sensation but also for a number of other health-promoting effects.

Medicinal ginger (Zingiber officinale) is a plant species commonly used as a spice, which is also widely used in herbal medicine and conventional medicine. It shows anti-inflammatory, antioxidant, analgesic, antimicrobial, cholesterol-lowering, and cholagogic effects. In addition, ginger is helpful in combating nausea (including motion sickness).

Natural antioxidants
Both capsaicin and active substances present in ginger have antioxidant properties, thanks to which they have the ability to reduce adverse effects of oxidative stress. Long-term oxidative stress leads to damaging of cellular structures, which in turn is the cause of the development of numerous diseases and accelerated aging of the body.

Antioxidative activity of capsaicin is based mainly on the ability to inhibit oxidation reactions, including oxidation of LDL lipoproteins, a process leading to the development of atherosclerosis. This way, capsaicin supports the health of the cardiovascular system. Ginger owes its antioxidative activity to the presence of polyphenolic compounds, thanks to which it has a high ability to scavenge free radicals.

Supporting the process of weight loss
Capsaicin may effectively support the processes of losing excess body weight and body fat through several mechanisms, primarily through the influence on fat metabolism and (along with ginger) thermoregulation. These properties have been demonstrated in both human and animal studies.

Capsaicin has been shown to have an effect on the amount of proteins involved in thermoregulation and fat metabolism. This is done by capsaicin inhibition of the transcription of genes encoding proteins that stimulate adipogenesis processes and by stimulation of the transcription of genes encoding proteins involved in thermogenesis (heat production by the body). Capsaicin may increase the secretion of adrenaline and noradrenaline from the adrenal medulla, which further intensifies thermogenesis.

In another study, capsaicin proved to have the catabolic properties – an increase in breaking down the fat was observed. Capsaicin may also reduce appetite. All these effects lead to an increase in energy expenditure and a reduction in energy consumption and therefore increase the calorie deficit. The result is the faster reduction in weight and body fat.

The gastroprotective properties
Despite the common belief that hot spices should be avoided in order to prevent stomach diseases, numerous reports indicate the gastroprotective potential of capsaicin. It has been shown that the systematic intake of small amounts of capsaicin reduced the risk of developing, e.g. stomach ulcers.

This effect is associated with the activation of TRPV1 in the mucosal neurons. This results in the release of appropriate neuropeptides and nitric oxide, improving blood microcirculation in this area.

Compounds containing organic components of ginger root are characterized by high biological activity. Ginger root is used in medicine, due to the prevention of infection, to ensure a balance of gastrointestinal bacteria, involved in the production of bile. It has a beneficial effect on the functioning of the circulatory system as an antioxidant, lowers blood pressure, causing a delay in the processes of formation of LDL cholesterol (inhibitor).
