Isoleucine, by activating phosphoinositide 3-kinase (PI3K) and protein kinase C (PKT), stimulates the uptake of glucose by muscle cells. It ensures high energy level in the organism and saves its own muscle glycogen. Leucine does not have such an effect as it also influences the processes, which quieten this activity.

Despite increased glucose uptake during supplementation with isoleucine, this amino acid does not stimulate glycogen resynthesis and it does not increase insulin secretion.

Anticatabolic activity of isoleucine consists in inhibiting the process of glycogenesis, which transforms protein amino acids into glycogen.

Isoleucine is an essential branched amino acid (BCAA), leucine-isomer.
