Folic acid (vitamin B9) is an organic compound formed from pteridine, para-aminobenzoic acid, and the rest of glutamic acid. Folic acid is the most chemically stable folate donor. It is converted in the organism to 5,10-methylenetetrahydrofolate, and then to the active form of folate – levomefolic acid (5-MTHF). The compound exhibits a wide range of effects on the organism and is crucial for its normal functioning.
Supplementation with folic acid is recommended for pregnant women, as well as women planning pregnancy and breastfeeding. Numerous scientific studies have shown that folate contributes to the growth of maternal tissues during pregnancy.
Folates help maintain the proper metabolism of homocysteine. Homocysteine is an amino acid whose high blood level is an independent risk factor for the development of cardiovascular disorders.
Foliates help maintain proper psychological functions. Like other B vitamins, they contribute to the reduction of tiredness and fatigue.
Folates are involved in the process of cell division. The active form of folates is a cofactor of the enzymes that synthesise compounds essential for cells, like the DNA and RNA. That is why the right supply of folates is particularly important for intensively multiplying tissues, for example foetal tissues or bone marrow. In addition, folates help in the proper synthesis of amino acids and in the production of blood. They are also important for the proper functioning of the immune system.
