Swanson Olive Leaf Extract is a dietary supplement containing a high-quality extract from olive tree (Olea europaea), standardized for the content of 20% oleuropeins. One capsule contains 500 mg of the extract. The substances naturally occurring in olive leaves have antioxidant effect, regulate the level of cholesterol in blood and strengthen immunity of the organism.

The lowest rate of circulatory system diseases and digestive system cancers is observed among inhabitants of the Mediterranean coast. This is why, the Mediterranean diet is commonly considered as one of the healthiest diets in the world. In the Mediterranean diet the main source of fat are olives and olive oil. Due to its chemical composition, olives and olive oil demonstrate a range of positive effects on the human organism. The source of these substances are not only fruits, but also leaves of the olive tree.

Olive (O.europaea) is a long-lived kind of tree, cultivated mainly on the terrains of the Mediterranean countries. Olive leaves are commonly used in herbalism. There are many active substances in the leaves of this plant, i.a. oleuropein, triterpenes, sterols, flavonoids (apigenin, quercetin and their derivatives), phenolic acids.

Oleuropein is the main active ingredient of the extract. It is a substance with glycoside structure (secoiridoide), present in the fruits and leaves of olive. The results of the studies confirmed strong antioxidant properties of oleuropein. Antioxidant effect of oleuropein is intensified by other ingredients of the extract – phenols and flavonoids. Synergistic activity of these substances provides olive with high antioxidant activity, almost 2,5 times higher than vitamin C, E and lycopene. Moreover, oleuropein has antifungal, antibacterial, antiviral and cardioprotective properties.

Antioxidant activity of olive leaf extract entails a range of positive consequences. The excess of free radicals in the organism induced by stress factors, improper diet or drugs leads to unbeneficial oxidative stress and inflammatory processes. Inflammations taking place in the organism may be transformed into concrete diseases, primarily civilization diseases (cardiovascular diseases, cancers, autoimmune and neurodegenerative diseases). Oxidative stress also accelerates aging processes of the organism. Therefore, it is also important to provide the organism with antioxidant substances that sweep away free radicals, strengthen the immune system and constitute the element of prophylaxis of many diseases.

Oleuropein demonstrates affinity to the chain of amino acids of HIV. Studies carried out on the extract from olive provided promising results. It was proven that oleuropein and its metabolites may prevent the replication of virus HIV-1, by blocking the place gp41. It constitutes a starting point for further research and a chance to use olive in inhibiting the development of HIV in the organism of a carrier.

To sum up, Swanson Olive Leaf Extract is a natural dietary supplement, complementing a diet in essential substances with antioxidant properties. It is recommended especially to people who lead a stressful lifestyle, in order to support the immune system and general health and also as an element of prophylaxis of civilization diseases.
