Swanson Acerola is a natural dietary supplement which supports the body system in fighting free radicals and stimulates natural immune processes. Thanks to a wide range of antioxidant substances, it also shows anti-ageing and anticancer properties.

Acerola (Latin Malpighia glabra) is a plant that originates from the regions of the Caribbean, Central and South America. Acerola cherries extract contains 10 times more vitamin C than the commonly known parsley or citrus fruits. Next to the large amounts of ascorbic acid, Acerola cherries are also a source of significant amounts of bioflavonoids, including anthocyanins and flavonols. Moreover, acerola contains important for the human body system vitamins (A, E and B vitamins) and minerals i.e. magnesium, calcium, phosphorus and iron. The natural origin of these beneficial ingredients allows for easier absorption than synthetic sources.

Vitamin C is a product of glucose transformation. The human body system is not able to synthesize vitamin C by itself, so it is necessary to provide it regularly with food. It is a water soluble vitamin. Its absorption occurs mainly in the duodenum and in the upper parts of the small intestine. The human body system has only little ability to store this vitamin, which is another indication of the need for its supplementation.

Ascorbic acid is an important factor supporting immune processes of the body system. It has stimulating influence on the human immune system. It stimulates the synthesis of interferon and some classes of immunoglobulins. It increases the activity of immune cells, i.e. NK cells (natural killers) and lymphocytes B and T as well as affects the functioning of monocytes, macrophages and granulocytes which are involved in the process of eliminating some of the pathogens from the body system.

Vitamin C participates in a number of very important biochemical processes in the body system. It is characterized by strong antioxidant properties. Thanks to the presence of a specific enediol formation, L-ascorbic acid is easily oxidized to dehydroascorbic acid, which similarly to L-ascorbic acid is a biologically active form, but as a result of further changes it may be hydrolyzed to a non-active form. The unique structure of vitamin C makes it a strong reducer and allows for efficient neutralization of reactive oxygen species which are by-products produced in cells during their metabolism. In this way, it prevents damage to DNA and other important biological structures.

It protects from harmful oxidation of lipids, functional groups of some enzymatic proteins and metal ions needed for the proper functioning of catalytic proteins.

Vitamin C protects the digestive system and prevents from the development of tumours of the esophagus and stomach, because it inhibits the activity of Helicobacter pylori in the stomach and blocks the reaction of nitrosation, due to which nitrosamines are produced from nitrates. Nitrosamines are carcinogenic compounds.

Ascorbic acid affects also the synthesis of collagen. It is a cofactor for some enzymatic proteins and counteracts the oxidation of enzymes necessary for the proper conduction of the biosynthesis of this protein.

Anthocyanins: they belong to a group of flavonoids. They are natural plant pigments, which are responsible for the dark red colour of acerola cherries. They are present in significant quantities in the skin of this fruit.

First of all, they show antioxidant properties. They have the ability to reduce free radicals produced in the body system as a result of oxidative stress. Cause for such properties is the presence of numerous hydroxyl groups in their molecules.

They also counteract oxidation of lipids and fatty acids. Because of the ability to inhibit pro-inflammatory enzymes, they show also anti-inflammatory properties. Thanks to that they positively influence the cardiovascular system and prevent the development of atherosclerosis. Anthocyanins may also be important factors in the prevention of obesity and diabetes, because they can reduce blood glucose and lower the levels of cholesterol, triglycerides and low density lipoproteins.

They also have a beneficial influence on the regeneration of rhodopsin, stimulate the synthesis of collagen in the trabecular reticulum and protect the retina from damage, so that they are important element of the prevention of eye diseases i.a. glaucoma and macular degeneration.
