Now Foods Selenium is a dietary supplement containing 100 mcg of 1-selenomethionine in one tablet.

Selenium – a dietary microelement, occurring in a human body at the amount of 10-30 mg. It is a part of many structures, called selenoproteins. It demonstrates antioxidant properties, thanks to which it protects healthy cells against free radicals.

Selenium for healthy thyroid
This element enjoys great popularity among the people suffering from hypothyroidism and auto-immune Hashimoto's thyroiditis. This is fully justified, as selenium constitutes a very important element of enzymes which influence thyroid health.

A group of enzymes dependent on selenium are among others deiodinases. These enzymes take part in transforming inactive thyroxin (T4) into active triiodothyronine (T3) by unbinding one iodine molecule. Thanks to this, thyroid hormones may cause larger influence on metabolism acceleration.

During iodine oxidation to the active form, so that it could be used to build thyroid hormones, the concentration of a certain by-product rises – hydrogen peroxide, which may destroy thyroid tissue. To neutralize peroxides, we need thyroid peroxidase, which is composed, among others, of selenium.

Oxidative stress reduction
During numerous reactions in our organism free oxygen radicals are produced – by-products that may have the ability to damage healthy tissues. It is extremely important to maintain the amount of reactive oxygen forms in physiological values and to do this, we need proper supply of antioxidants. One of the factors, which are helpful in neutralizing free radicals is selenium.

Excessive oxidative stress is often related to faster aging of the whole organism and damages to healthy cells, which may intensify the processes of carcinogenesis. As it is visible, it is worth controlling this destructive process to enjoy good health as long as possible.

Selenium and cancer
In the world of science, the correlation between low selenium supply in a diet and developing cancer more frequently has been noticed. This effect is clearly visible in the case of China, the population of which eats too low amounts of this element.

Selenium metabolites, such as methylselenol and selenoproteins, among which we distinguish mainly glutathione peroxidase and selenoprotein P, are connected to anti-cancer effect of this element. Selenium has influence especially on prostate, breast, lungs, head and neck cancers.

Selenium deficits effects
Keshan disease, i.e. cardiomyopathy resulting from the deficit of selenium, is most strongly connected to this element. Another disease resulting from selenium shortages is Kashin-Beck diseases, i.e. dystrophy of joint cartilages. Both these diseases appear mainly in China.

Among other symptoms of low supply of selenium there are also depression states, fragile and falling off nails, muscle pain and even problems with fertility in men.

Influence on procreation
One of the serious consequences of lack of selenium is male infertility. It stems from the fact that selenium is necessary to maintain proper process of spermatogenesis, therefore its deficits means lower sperm quality. It is incredibly problematic because of the fact that in case of problems with fertility, we look for problems mainly in women, while the reason for the problem may be only the lack of one element in a partner.

Selenium should not be ignored also during pregnancy, as similarly to iodine, it is essential for the proper development of fetus. Its deficit may contribute to miscarriages or permanent fetus damages.

Great assimilability and quality of the raw material
Selenium in the form of l-selenomethionine is the best assimilable form of this element, its bioavailability reaches even 90%. The molecule of selenomethionine is composed of selenium in 40% and methionine amino acid in 60%.

A considerable part of preparations with selenium on the market contains in its composition yeasts, from which selenium may be obtained. Unfortunately, yeasts are a frequent allergen, which may exclude these supplement for many people. Luckily, the company NOW Food has taken care about this aspect and they used a raw material free from allergy-causing yeasts in the production of the supplement.

Now Foods Selenium is recommended to people with a diagnosed selenium deficit in blood tests and also those complaining about the ailments connected to thyroid health. It may be helpful in infection prophylaxis and as a means lowering the risk of cancer development.
