Why is supporting liver so important?
The liver is one of our most precious organs. Milk thistle (Silybum marianum) - a plant with very beneficial characteristics; among other things, it supports liver functioning and regeneration. Milk thistle fruits contain flavones, flavonols (kaempferol, quercetin), taxifolin, vitamins C, E and K, valuable phytosteroles (including beta-sitosterol), a mixture of essential fatty acids (EFA) with a big amount of linoleic acid (50%), mineral salts and silymarin (2-3%), which is the main active component. Scientific tests have shown that milk thistle protects and regenerates liver cells.

Silymarin is a flavonolignan complex of plant origin used in medicine, obtained from milk thistle seed coat. It contains: silibinin, isosilibinin, silycristine and silydianin and taxifolin. The compound neutralises free radicals formed during detoxification. It regulates fat metabolism in the liver, preventing its steatosis and, as a result, cirrhosis. If cirrhosis has already occurred, silybinin inhibits further liver cell degradation.

Moreover, silymarin prevents bile retention in bile ducts and exhibits cholepoietic properties, thanks to which it improves digestive processes. It reduces the concentration of "bad cholesterol" (LDL), thus preventing atherosclerosis. It boosts liver cell regeneration, e.g. after a viral disease.

N-acetylcysteine (NAC) - an n-acetyl derivative of cysteine; a carrier of free thiol groups (-SH) which have the ability to bind free oxygen radicals. Thanks to small molecular mass, it permeates cell membranes and reaches intercellular space, where it releases cysteine - a substrate necessary for glutathione synthesis.

Thanks to its oxidising properties, NAC is used in order to increase the level of glutathione and strengthen the protection of cells from the influence of harmful substances. Moreover, it neutralises toxic metabolites of drugs (mainly paracetamol), reduces the risk of nephropathy and proves effective in AIDS treatment through inhibiting the activation of protein NF-kB. NAC is also used in the case of death cap poisoning.

Alpha-lipoic acid (ALA) - a compound of the carboxylic acids. It is an antioxidant with unique properties. It cleanses the organism from toxins. It improves the functioning of other antioxidants, i.e. vitamin C, vitamin E, recreating their antioxidant properties. It protects the organism from the activity of any oxidising agents. Because of its specific water- and fat-solubility, its effects are visible both in cells and in cell membranes.

R-ALA is a biologically active and a more bioavailable form of alpha-lipoic acid, that is isolated R-isomers. R-ALA supports and stabilises the glycaemic level of the organism and has a strong antioxidant effect. What is more, it is beneficial for carbohydrate and fat metabolism, participates in the processes of detoxification, increases physical and mental capacity, supports the regeneration of damaged DNA, lipid and protein structures, as well as binds and removes many toxic metabolites.

Sulphoraphane is an isothiocyanate found mainly in broccoli and their sprouts. The precursor of the substance, so beneficial for health, is glucosinolate, to be more exact, glucoraphanin, which is converted to sulphoraphane in the process of hydrolysis with the presence of the enzyme of myrosinase. The compound is a panacea for lung, breast, bowel and prostate cancer. It exhibits anticancer properties both in the phase of the formation and development of neoplastic lesions.

Picrorhiza kurroa is found in the Nepalese Himalayas. It is one of the oldest medicinal plants from the Karnali zone. This perennial herb is used in many therapies of traditional and Himalayan medicine. It has been used for many centuries in Indian Ayurveda medicine for digestive problems. It also proved effective in treating asthma, liver damage, wound healing and vitiligo.

Uridine-5'-monophosphate (UMP) is a pyrimidine ribonucleotide, which is one of RNA components. It is an ester of phosphoric acid with uridine. Uridine is a component of RNA chains, present in every organism. Its supplementation can be used in the case of spinal pains, neuralgia, polyneuropathy in order to supply the organism with nutrients that support natural processes of nerve regeneration. It has also been demonstrated that UMP supports liver functioning and regeneration.
