Melatonin 3mg Melatonin 3mg

Swanson Melatonin is a dietary supplement, in the composition of which there is melatonin – an endogenous compound responsible for regulating natural biological clock.

The preparation stabilizes daily rhythm of sleep and wakefulness and prevents sleep disorders. It is recommended especially to seniors and people, who work shifts or often change time zones. It helps to deal with the problem of insomnia, limits the frequency of waking up during the night and intensifies regenerative processes taking place during sleep. The supplementation may also contribute to improving memory and mental efficiency. Additionally, melatonin strengthens immunity and prevents osteoporosis.

Melatonin (N-Acetyl-5-hydroxytryptamine) is an endogenous hormone secreted by pineal gland under the influence of light. To its synthesis the presence of tryptophan is necessary, which under the influence of hydroxylation and decarboxylation coverts to serotonin and then, in the course of further transformations, it changes into melatonin.

The level of melatonin is not constant – it changes during the day and the whole life. The highest concentration of melatonin takes place at night, lower during the day. With age, its production is decreased, therefore elderly people often deal with sleep disorders.

Melatonin’s lipophilic character makes it able to cross all biological barriers in the organism, including blood-brain barrier and may cause reactions on many biochemical pathways.

Solution of sleep problems
Melatonin regulates internal biological clock and stabilizes daily rhythm of sleep and wakefulness. In the evening hours, it sends a signal to the organism about the time of rest, causing sleepiness. It accelerates falling asleep, shortens latency of sleep and REM phase. Importantly, it does not change sleep structure. Thanks to this, after waking up, there is no feeling of or flummoxing or befuddlement. Quite the contrary – melatonin supports night regeneration of the organism, therefore in the morning you are rested and feel like you have got enough sleep.

Melatonin not only helps to solve the problem of chronic insomnia, but also may normalize sleep cycle in people working shifts. Unnatural tampering with sleep hours destabilizes the activity of internal biological clock. It is often manifested by problems with falling asleep, even when you are very tired (e.g. after working the whole night) or the feeling of tiredness after a seemingly well-slept night. Taking melatonin prevents these problems.

Melatonin alleviates the symptoms of jet-lag, therefore it is recommended to people, who often change time zones (flight attendants, pilots, businessmen). It makes it easier for the organism to adjust to a new time zone, accelerates synchronization of the biological clock and prevents sleep disorders.

Endogenous production of melatonin in the organism is decreased with age, therefore among elderly people sleep problems appear very often. Additional doses of melatonin may turn out to be an effective remedy for these problems.

Immunity support
Melatonin stimulates immunity in two ways. It supports the work of thymus, in which thymus-dependent lymphocytes mature and develop, which are the most important cells of the immune system. Additionally, it slows down the natural processes of thymus decline, which progresses with age and weakens organism’s immunity.

Melatonin is an inhibitor of the enzyme activating leukotrienes – lipids responsible for inflammatory reactions in the organism. It regulates the secretion of TNF-a. Excessive activity of this cytokine intensifies the symptoms of autoimmune diseases and causes the development of cancer.

Antioxidant potential and protection of the brain
Melatonin is an active antioxidant, i.e. the compounds having the ability to neutralize free radicals. It sweeps hydroxyl radicals and hydrogen peroxides from the organism. The strength of its activity is comparable to the power of the most well-known antioxidants, i.e. vitamin C and E.

Apart from the fact that melatonin fights on its own with the excess of reactive oxygen forms, it also increases the concentration of natural antioxidants in the organism – superoxide dismutase, glutathione peroxidase and catalase. It also stimulates the secretion of glutathione, which is the most important intracellular antioxidant.

Oxidative processes are especially dangerous for brain cells. Oxidative stress and the excess of free radicals are the main causes of neuronal damages and the development of neurodegenerative diseases. Melatonin, thanks to the ability to cross blood-brain barrier, may directly influence central nervous system. It protects brain cells against oxidative stress, secures them from the toxic influence of many compounds and harmful effect of reactive oxygen forms. By the same token, it lowers the risk of the development of Alzheimer’s and Parkinson’s diseases.

Bone metabolism improvement
Melatonin is essential for the proper development and transformations taking place in bone tissue. It is responsible for maintaining proper balance between the processes of ossification (forming bones) and osteolysis (destroying and eliminating old bone mass). It affects many compounds engaged in bone metabolism, i.a. vitamin D3, calcitonin and parathyroid hormone. It prevents osteoporosis and helps to maintain proper bone mineralization.

Summing up, Melatonin is a safe antidote to sleep disorders. Contrary to synthetic sleep-inducing drugs, it is not addictive and is devoid of side-effects. It helps to restore natural daily rhythm, which is easy to disturb by heavy stress, working shifts or changing time zones. It constitutes an invaluable support for elderly people, among whom problems with sleep are the consequence of organism’s aging and reduced organic melatonin production. Additional benefits from using the preparation are increased immunity and protection against osteoporosis and neurodegenerative diseases.

Melatonin

General information

Melatonin - resulting in the largest quantities in the pineal gland pinealocytes - indoleamine, naturally synthesized using N-acetylserotonin created previously with serotonin. Its characteristics manifested by interacting with melatonin receptors MT1, MT2 and MT3 and nuclear receptors. Affecting the operation of the biological clock, it regulates the processes occurring both in the diurnal, and long-term cycle, e.g. annually. It gives the body a signal to sleep. In preparing for the night's rest, system reduces the temperature of the body, lowers blood pressure, slows digestion and adjusts the rate of biochemical changes. Improves mood and attitude to life after a good night's sleep. It has a significant impact on the discharge of hormones of the hypothalamus, pituitary and gonads, particularly follicle stimulating hormone (FSH) and luteinizing (LH), this is reflected in the normalization of reproductive performance. By reducing the expression of ERa, inhibiting the association of estradiol ER-ERE for DNA, and reducing aromatase activity, shows an anti-estrogen action Optimizing growth hormone and cortisol levels, improves night renewal system, the growth of the desired structures and burning of excessive body fat.
