Doctor’s Best Fully Active B12 is a dietary supplement in the composition of which there is vitamin B12 in the best assimilable form of methylcobalamin. While other forms (including the most popular one – cyanocobalamin) need to undergo complicated transformations inside the system, methylcobalamin works immediately. It is characterized by the highest possible bioavailability and activity.
The preparation is recommended to supplement the level of vitamin B12. The groups especially prone to deficits are elderly people (due to deteriorating with age absorption of vitamin B12 from food) and vegetarians and vegans, who eliminate products of animal origin from their diet – which are the main source of vitamin B12. The supplementation is recommended also to people with increased homocysteine level and methylation disorders.
Vitamin B12 (cobalamin), also called „red vitamin”, belongs to the part of vitamin B group which is soluble in water. It contains in its composition centrally located cobalt atom surrounded by four reduced pyrrole rings. It takes part in numerous biochemical processes in the organism and conditions proper metabolism of fats, proteins and carbohydrates. It is essential for the proper functioning of hematopoietic and nervous system.
Blood-forming activity
Vitamin B12 takes active part in the blood-forming process. It is related to a glycoprotein called Castle’s factor, forming hematopoiesis factor, which is essential for the production of blood cells in the hematopoietic system. Moreover, it conditions the appropriateness of erythropoiesis, i.e. the process of forming erythrocytes in bone marrow.
The impairment of the absorption of vitamin B12 and consequently its deficits are responsible for the development of anemia and pernicious anemia (megaloblastic). It is a dangerous medical condition, in which immature, enlarged and improperly built erythrocytes, which are not able to fulfill their functions are released to blood from bone marrow.
Regulation of homocysteine level
Methylcobalamin plays the role of the most important cofactor for the enzymes taking part in the process of methylation. Without its presence, proper conversion of homocysteine to methionine is not possible. The impairment of this reaction results in the increase of homocysteine level in the organism.
Elevated homocysteine level primarily increases the risk of atherosclerosis, stroke and heart attack. The newest studies suggest that it may also lead to the development of cognitive disorders and dementia.
Influence on the nervous system
Cobalamin influences a range of processes taking part in the nervous tissue and is responsible for the condition of brain cells. The production of phospholipids in cell membranes, which condition proper nerve transmission are dependent on its presence.
Cobalamin influences the production of myelin sheaths, protecting neurons and ensuring proper communication between them. Neurological symptoms, rarely associated with vitamin B12 deficits, include the feeling of tingling, numbing, hyperesthesia, which appear as a result of demineralization.
Vitamin B12 is essential for proper mental efficiency and psychological health. It indirectly takes part in the synthesis of the most important neurotransmitters, which are responsible for good memory and proper cognitive functions. The studies carried out on people in advanced age showed that the worse results in cognitive tests were obtained by people with dramatically low level of cobalamin. There is also a certain correlation between the level of cobalt (an important part of the structure of cobalamin molecule) and the occurrence of depression.
Proper energy metabolism
Cobalamin is essential for proper metabolic processes. It plays the role of a cofactor in protein, fat and carbohydrate metabolism. It also takes part in energy production in mitochondria. It contributes to decreasing the feeling of fatigue and weariness, increases the level of vitality and activity.
Summing up, Best Fully Active B12 is the best way to maintain proper level of vitamin B12 in the organism and level up possible deficits. Solid dose and optimal form are reflected in high effectiveness of the preparation.
